strength, which has historically also been called “fortitude,” is the stage in the tarot journey of overcoming a large obstacle by stepping into your inner bravery and confidence. traditionally pictured with a woman holding open a lion's jaw, the imagery is not about brute physical strength but rather about a calm inner fortitude that allows one to face fears or large barriers, whether physical, mental, or emotional, and triumph over them. when pulled reversed, strength may indicate any of the shadow sides of this, including self-doubt, vanity, lack of self control, or lack of courage.
