beltane is one of the annual fire festivals in the wheel of the year, and is the pagan gaelic celebration where many of the modern may day traditions hail from. marking the beginning of summer, it's held between the spring equinox and summer solstice. it's marked by dancing and wrapping ribbons around maypoles, large bonfires, and feasting. in fact, beltane literally translates to “bright fire.”

with that in mind, this shawl features lace and cables to mimic the rough shape of embers as they catch light and burst into flame, culminating in a border with pointed edges pressing further out to take up space. the heavier weight of a heavy dk wool makes it the perfect layer for those still-cool early summer nights.

needles: US 7 (4.5mm) 32” (80cm) circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge

yarn: 699 yards (639 metres), 336g of heavy dk weight yarn

sample shown uses sunflower knit’s pasture dk (100% albertan finn, 233 yards [213 metres], 112g) x 3 skeins in brazilwood

notions: tapestry needle, 2 stitch markers, t-pins and blocking wires

gauge: 15 stitches x 29 rows = 4” (10cm), over main body, blocked
