smash (the patriarchy) - pdf pattern

note: this purchase is for a pdf pattern. you will receive a download link upon purchase.

this pattern was designed in direct reaction to the results of the 2016 american election. years on, it’s only too clear how important the direct work of activists has been and continues to be. the following is from the original pattern listing:

the next period of american/global history is not going to be easy, to say the least. i wanted to figure out some way to help, something that wouldn’t feel like i was taking advantage of a terrible situation to push sales.

knitting is my therapy. it’s also my business, and many of you know i rarely offer free patterns. i offer this pattern for anyone who needs some knitting therapy though - please feel free to use it for yourself, or to teach a class, or to make cozy toques for activists on the front lines (like the water protectors at standing rock).

in lieu of payment, i ask that you consider donating money if you are able to a charity instead that is doing work to help those most affected - immigrants, queers, bipoc, climate change warriors, women. it will come as no surprise when those groups start to see their funding slashed, and our community support for them will matter even more than it does now.

a final note: if anything i have said above offends you, i honestly don’t care. the magical thing about all of this is that you don’t have to like me or my political views. you also don’t have to download and/or buy any of my patterns. ever. in fact, i’m very ok with you not downloading my patterns. it’s fine that we don’t agree. what’s not fine is that so many people are about to lose their basic rights as humans, and the environment is going to take a backseat to capitalist interests. if you disagree with my political views, please just go find someone else’s hat pattern to knit. there are thousands to choose from.

quick edit to mention a few things
a) the pattern doesn’t include any images with flipped birds or saucy language. if you’d like to use this pattern for teaching wee ones, the pdf is perfectly safe to use.
b) i totally forgot to mention the fab etsy shops where i got my patches! check them out here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/ofcourseyoucan
