cuain - pdf pattern

cuain is gaelic for “harbour.” perhaps a little bit on the nose, the stitch making up the border of this shawl is often referred to as the “fishbones” stitch. made with floats that are caught every few rows and with garter columns in between those floats, this is a fun project that will easily fall into rhythm on your needles. a nice thick garter border finishes it off, and then that asymmetrical swoop will sit naturally across your shoulders ever after.
needles: US 7 (4.5mm) 32” (80cm) circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
yarn: 750 yards (687 metres), 300g of dk weight yarn*
sample shown uses harrisville designs’ nightshades (80% american cormo/20% american wool, 250 yards [229 metres], 100g) x 3 skeins in dashboard
*note: due to the lofty nature of the suggested yarn, it’s a good idea to grab an extra skein just to be on the safe side so you don’t have to play yarn chicken. use any leftovers for a pair of fingerless mitts or a cute hat!
notions: tapestry needle, 2 stitch markers
gauge: 16 stitches x 25 rows = 4” (10cm), over main body, blocked
